Preventing and responding to violence against women in politics and in parliaments

The IPU, in cooperation with the National Assembly of Togo and the African Parliament Union is organizing an in-person regional Conference for African Parliaments in Lomé, from 29 November to 1 December 2022.

The Conference will be an opportunity to examine in depth how violence against women in politics and in parliaments manifests itself, and which issues are at stake. By taking up the topic, and acknowledging and giving a name to this worldwide problem, parliaments can help to break the silence and pave the way for solutions. Their responsibility also includes preventing the problem and responding to it with legislative, regulatory and policy measures that they can adopt so that their countries’ social and political environments, as well as the environments of their legislative institutions, no longer tolerate any form of gender-based violence.
